I need help with a full turn?

J-Dawg12324 asked:

Recently i have lost about 2 club lengths in distance. For instance: I use to hit my 8 iron 150-155. But it’s dropped to about 130. A few weeks ago my golf instructor told me it was my wrist cock on my down swing. Now i’ve fixed that and i have my 8 iron back up to about 140-145. And now i have another problem. Im not getting a full hip and shoulder. Im in between a 1/2 to 3/4 swing. so what are some tips so i can start getting a full swing and parallel at the top. thanks..

Try checking your three alignment areas at address: feet, hips, and shoulders. If your hips, shoulders, or both are open with respect to your feet, you will not be able to complete a full turn. To check this, have someone stand behind you and make sure you’re aligned correctly. Another problem, one that I constantly battle, is an incomplete weight transfer. If a golfer is stuck on his front side, the hips cannot turn; therefore, the shoulders cannot turn as far. Ask your pro if you are making a good weight transfer. I will try to explain one of my weight transfer drills. Start by addressing the ball normally. Now, moving your back foot only, place it about an inch to the right of your front foot (assuming you are right-handed). Now, start your back swing and simultaneously replant your right foot in its correct position. As you start to reach the top of your back swing, lift your front foot off the ground. Concentrate on making a full hip and shoulder turn; this will be easier because your left side is out of the way. Now, start your downswing, replant your front foot, and allow your weight to transfer to your left side. Finish your swing normally. I hope this makes sense.

Have you been lifting weights and working out?
Building muscle is great but you need to do regular golf stretches to make those new muscles limber enough to allow you to get a full turn in your swing.
A full turn allows your body to coil and your muscles “load up”in your back swing. When you release that coil, it is the turn of your body that generates club head speed more than your arms themselves. Practice turning back and forth like you do in your swing and let your arms hang loose. The turn of your torso will cause your arms to come around very quickly without actually using muscles in your arms.
Exercise and stretching on a regular basis, in my opinion, will have you on top of your game in a couple weeks.

Keep your chin up. Burying your chin in your chest will prevent your shoulders from rotating properly on the back swing. Also, make a conscious effort to get the front shoulder behind the ball on the take away. Place a club across your shoulders behind your head and make turns away from the ball. Your shoulder turn should put the butt of the club pointing to a spot on the ground behind the ball. This drill helps flexibility and keeps the feel of the proper turn. Good luck.
