I need help with golf clubs?

Amber P asked:

For christmas I want to buy my boyfriend a complete set of golf clubs and I am under the impression that Callaway clubs are the best? Could someone help me with what specific callaway clubs are the newest and the best ones out on the market? I have no clue about golfing so you would be a big help! thank you!

If you have no clue about golfing I would take him to pick out his own clubs. Callaway is a quality brand, but for something your boyfriend will use for several years, he’ll most likely want something that fits him just right.

Calloway is indeed a top name brand. However, I would definatly not say they are the best. The most popular brand based on number of clubs on the Pro Tour is Taylormade. Taylormade, Calloway, Titleist, Ping and Mizuno are all great brands. I know there are other good brands as well (Adams and Nike) but the above brands have been on top the longest and been exclusively making golf clubs for many years whereas Nike is fairly new to golf equipment (in the past decade).

It will be relatively difficult to buy him clubs unless you know what type of player he is. Does he play often? Is he good…shoots in the 70’s (really good), 80’s (pretty good), 90’s (decent) or 100’s (needs practice)? If you are unsure of how he plays, and you still want it to be a surprise, go with a club that is good for all categories. The top two sets (in my opinion) that are great clubs and will be good for a player of most handicaps are the Taylormade R7’s and the Calloway X-22’s (or X-20’s). Both of these sets are considered by Golfdigest.com and Golf.com to be “Game Improvement” Irons which means they are more forgiving on off-centered hits (which most of us, even pro’s tend to make once in a while) and help provide more trajectory to get the ball higher in the air which is another place many people have difficulty with. I personally searched and researched many times over and after hitting them all in the simulators, I bought a set of the Taylormade R7’s. They are great clubs that perform as well as they look.

I have been in your shoes before with my girlfriend and wanting to buy her a surprise and was unsure of what to get. I got the same answers, “give them the money and let them buy it”, but that ruins the surprise factor of it. If you have the money and want the surprise, pick up either set of the above irons and I HIGHLY doubt he would be disappointed with either set. Just be sure to buy them and keep a receipt. Once he swings the clubs once or even takes off the plastic wrap, the clubs can not be returned, although some places may make exchanges for a certain %loss on the value of the clubs. He’ll still be surprised and can return them for something else if he wants. Hope this helps, and good luck.

I would take him with you to a golfsmith (if there is one near you). They have a great selection of golf equipment, so he can choose the ones he likes the best and are in your price range. Also, Golfsmith has a net that you can hit golf balls into, so he can try them out before you buy them.
