Shortening golf clubs?

GHSballer@comcast.net asked:

Im a High school golfer junior year. my golf game has been off and on ever match getting from 38 for 9 holes to 64. i recently went to Golfsmith and had one of the pro’s sugguest i get all my clubs shorten an 1nch. this would also adjust the length and lie of the club. If anyone has had this done, could you tell me how it changed your game. adjusting ur swing to smaller clubs? club speed? ball position?

From a physics standpoint, Shortened clubs will mean slightly reduced swing speed and power, but more control and a greater power impulse on the ball. Expect a slight increase in accuracy and height, but you might get slightly less distance out of the shot. Unless they would offer you a cheaper deal to do them all at once, I would reccommend shortening a few of your mid-irons first to see how it affects your game. If you don’t like the change, at least that way you’re not out an entire set of clubs.

Good luck, and keep your eye on the ball. ;-)

This much inconsistency is not caused by the clubs.

If you shorten your clubs, your cubhead speed will be reduced but not by much. Your drives may be 3 yards shorter. Your ball position should not change.

More than likely, you have grown in height quite a bit over the past year. You have not physically adjusted to your new height. If anything, your lie angle probably needs to be adjusted for your new height or you need longer clubs. Your social life has probably grown affecting the amount of time that you have for practice.

Prasctice will have the greatest effect on reducing inconsistency.

    What does your coach think?

In the Golfsmith catalog they tell you what hte length of your clubs should be depending on your height. Go to a thrift store and buy a 5 iron and shorten it to what the fitter said. then take the club out and hit it . You’ll know in a short time if the length is ok.

go to ping.com and they have a online fitting system. if you know ur height and can get someone to measure you from your wrist to the floor. then it will tell you. it is about 95% correct. it does not take into the account if you are extremely heavy, thin, or have a handicap of some form. try it. it does work.

your clubs should fit your body. if the pro at golfsmith is telling you to shorten your clubs it’s not to change your swing it’s because the clubs are to long. if you want to be more careful try shortening the clubs by a half inch then re-grip them play a few rounds and re-asses things then. if money is a big issue then try shortening your 7 iron and going to the range you know you the best. club speed at the head is slower the shorter the club thats simple physics. but i shortened my clubs because the guy i bought them from was 6-4 and there was no way to fit those clubs to a 5-10 person without cutting them . i did it myself and it couldnt be easier. grips are fairly cheap and all you need is some double sided masking tape from golfsmith and some solvent. you could do all your irons for 20-30 bucks with decent grips as well. all you need is a hack saw. i did the same thing for my wife with my old clubs when she bought my new set of irons. i got the taylor made R7 tp. man i love them . good luck man
