It is best to let a person pick out their own clubs. I could tell you to get brand X and he may not be able to hit them as well as he can hit brand Y.

I would say for the money (actually less than 500) is the Taylormade R7’s. The price just dropped to $399 in most stores and these clubs are used by beginners all the way up to PGA pro’s. I have a set and love them. They are very forgiving on off-center hits. They also are sole-weighted which helps give more trajectory. Kenny Perry just won this past weekend’s PGA even and he uses a few R7 irons with a few R7 TP irons mixed in as well. You can’t go wrong with the price and Taylormade is the #1 Iron on the PGA tour. Just my input but I bet he’ll love them!

I hate gift certificates because it shows a total lack of thought HOWEVER, this is a situation where a gift cert is a great idea. He needs to pick out his own clubs. My wife wanted to buy a set as a surprise one year for fathers day and she did just that.
The other option is to get him a set that can be returned, that way he will be open something but in effect its like a gift card. Maybe he won’t care and will just keep them as well.
